Is an Online Education Right for You?
Posted by admin in Educational Articles on August 27th, 2009
We live in the information age. We have grown so accustomed to information at the speed of light. The prospect of not having immediate access to countless numbers of facts and figures with the mere click of a few buttons for many of us is simply disconcerting. For this reason, it only makes sense that there are many people across the nation and around the world that are embracing the idea of online learning and educational opportunities.
But is online learning right for you? While many are turning to this new way of getting an education, there are an equal number of people around the world who are trying desperately to hold on to traditional methods of getting an education. For those people who feel that the information age has left them behind online learning may not be the best available option.
Still not sure if online learning is right for you. Here are a few questions you should ask yourself to help you narrow determine whether or not you an online education is right for you.
Are you disciplined? This may seem like such an innocuous question because we would all like to think that we are disciplined to some degree. The problem is that when you are in the driver’s seat for your own education you need to have a little more than some small degree of discipline. You need to be able to meet deadlines, take the tests, and hold yourself responsible for actually learning the information that you need to learn in order to pass the course. There is no one to blame but yourself if you do not manage to do well in your online classes. For some people, being in the drivers seat when it comes to motivating and pacing themselves and their learning practices is not for them
.
How do you learn best? We all have different methods of learning for which we retain information better than others. Online courses are reading intensive. If you have difficulties retaining the information you read, you may need to find an alternate learning method or seek solutions with the assistance of the course instructor before moving forward in an online learning environment.
Do you have a true desire to succeed? The answer to this question is quite important in determining whether or not online learning is in your best interest. There are many paths you can take in order to achieve the education and degree you desire. This is not the path of the masses, at least not yet. This type of learning, more than any other is easy to give up on through apathy. If you aren’t determined to do the assignments, to study the notes, and to really learn the material that is presented to you, then you really do not need to waste your time or the instructor’s time by continually making up excuses. Online courses are largely self-paced, but you do have a limited amount of time in which to learn the material before you need to move on. The teacher is responsible for providing you the information and material but you are responsible for everything that happens from that moment on. Are you ready for that responsibility?
Whether you are a first time college student or a professional that is returning to school after a long absence online, learning can open new doors of opportunity for your learning pleasure. You must be willing to walk through those doors and take the information that is presented to you, however, in order to be successful. My sincere hope is that everyone reading this will carefully consider whether or not the lack of structure that many online courses provides is going to be conducive to your specific learning and educational needs before taking the plunge.

How To Make Online Education Work For You
Posted by admin in Educational Articles on August 27th, 2009
However, when you are a working professional, managing work and attending college can be a daunting task. Previously, getting an advanced degree meant either quitting your full time job to attend college, or a very difficult juggling act between work and classes.
However, there has been a big improvement in how the education is delivered, and you don’t have to chuck your job to attend college anymore.
It is now possible to achieve your degree via online education. This phenomenon is revolutionizing the way in which education is delivered, and is finding increasing acceptance from students as well as employers. The popularity of online degrees can be gauged from the fact that many employers are offering tuition reimbursement to their employees.
The feedback for online degrees has largely been positive from both employers as well as employees. Consider the fact that more than 3.2 million students enrolled in online degrees in the fall of 2005, up from 2.3 million in 2004 – and the figure has been increasing ever since.
Hi-Tech and High Quality
Some of the best online degrees combine quality education and the latest technology. An online class is designed to be unique to your area of study. This is backed up by a unique alternative delivery option, which is built into the learning model.
For an online learning course, there are three major learning formats that are widely used by many institutions:
Webcourse- This consists of a website and online syllabus, with interactions through e-mail and discussion boards, as well as specially created chat rooms for students to interact.
Telecourse- Here, lessons are videotaped and televised on local cable channels, or viewed in libraries on campus.
Teleweb Course- With Teleweb courses, the videotaped lessons are coupled with a website for better correspondence between students and the instructor. Lessons may also be available for live streaming, online downloads, or even as podcasts.
Such interactive formats have enabled many professionals to earn an advanced degree at their own leisure and convenience, where they are not bound by any time constraints. As an added plus, students do not have to be physically present at any particular location, on or off campus.
Online degrees are available for host of different programs for all kinds of businesses. They are available through several accredited institutions across the country. Online degrees are available in many diverse fields of study, from accounting to nursing to business administration. There are also advanced degrees, such as the MBA, and PhD available.
Apart from these, there are also various non-degree certificates that can boost your credentials.
Employer Support
While online degrees are very convenient for students, there is increasing evidence that online degrees are far more accepted today than they were previously. Most employers see them in the same light as traditional college degrees. However, obtaining an online degree from an accredited institution is still largely favored.
Online education provides professionals with more options than ever before. Whether you’re a seasoned executive or are new to the working world, getting your degree while you are employed is no longer impossible.
